Sicriptin contains Bromocriptine Mesilate as its active ingredient, which belongs to a class of medications known as dopamine agonists. Bromocriptine functions by activating dopamine receptors in the brain, leading to various effects and multiple therapeutic applications.

The primary use of Sicriptin is for treating conditions caused by elevated levels of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain. By stimulating dopamine receptors, Sicriptin reduces prolactin production from the pituitary.

Elevated prolactin levels are linked to numerous issues. Excessive amounts of this hormone can lead to unintended breast milk production in both genders (galactorrhoea) as well as suppression of sexual gland functions (hypogonadism), which may cause infertility. High prolactin levels are also connected to certain breast and menstrual disorders. Lowering prolactin with bromocriptine can thus alleviate these conditions.

Sicriptin is also occasionally prescribed to inhibit or halt milk production for medical reasons following childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion. Since prolactin is responsible for stimulating breast milk production, reducing its levels with bromocriptine effectively curtails milk generation. Additionally, bromocriptine can be utilized to lessen prolactin production stemming from a type of pituitary tumor known as a prolactinoma.

Furthermore, Sicriptin's influence on dopamine receptors also reduces growth hormone secretion from the pituitary gland, which is beneficial for managing conditions characterized by excess growth hormone, such as acromegaly.

Lastly, Sicriptin can be employed in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. In individuals with Parkinson's, the neurotransmitter dopamine is typically depleted or absent, which is believed to contribute to the symptoms of the disease. By stimulating dopamine receptors, Sicriptin serves a function similar to dopamine replacement in the brain, thereby alleviating some of Parkinson's symptoms.
